In Ancient Rome, all the literature and poetry was written in Latin. A famous writer in Ancient Rome was Catullus. He lived a very humble life and his poetry still stands today. He was a lyric poet and his poems were very easy to access for a modern reader. He spent his years dedicated to his writing and in writing competitions, he outnumbered his friends a lot by coming up with ideas quickly. He met a lot of famous politicians including the philosopher Cicero and Julius Caesar. He also made some literary techniques. The one we would be most familiar with is alliteration which is the repeated occurrence of a consonant sound at the beginning of several words in the same sentence.

Literature and Poetry were great ways to express what Greeks thought about others and the world. One of the main poems were epics, or long story-telling poems. The two main epics are the Iliad and the Odyssey. These epics are about the hero Odysseus on his journey to Troy and his way home. The Ancient Greece are also known for writing the first plays, specifically dramas. A tragedy is a type of drama. It is a serious story that usually ends in disaster for the main character. In between scenes, the chorus or a group of people who sing, would inform people on background information or praise the gods while characters were preparing for future scenes. Another drama was a comedy, where people would make fun of citizens or politicians. Because of freedom, people enjoyed the humorous comedies.

One difference was that if someone made a play about a politician in Rome, they would be greatly offended rather than in Greece were they have more freedom to express themselves.
